This is me Mike, relaxing in our suite with a book and preparing to open the bottle of wine sent to us by the wine steward, apparently for noticing that my wine glass had a microscopic chip in the edge.

Itinerary and Trip Review

This is my lovely wife Cathy, standing at the rail of deck 12 on the ship.  The Sawyer Glacier behind her is a magnificent sight.  The 40’ shore tender over her right shoulder is only 1/3 the distance to the glacier.

Pictures

My primary goal was to take video on this trip.  But I often clicked the button on my camera that records a still digital image while I was videotaping.  After filtering through the nearly 300 pictures, and throwing out the really bad ones, I put the rest in categories as best I could.  Most browsers will let you use the “Back Space” key to return to the list after viewing each picture.  If you have problems please e-mail me by clicking here.

Sawyer Glacier

These pictures were taken while videotaping.  The first section is various attempts to capture the intense blue color, and do little to reflect the enormous size of the glacier.

These next shots captured some of the many incidents of glacial calving (Chunks of glacier breaking & falling into the sea).  Even though some look relatively small, these chunks of ice made huge cannon-like noises when they hit water.  There is two series of pictures capturing the progress of two events.

These next three shots were taken while taking a “here’s my wife” picture.  Look just to the left of Cathy’s face (her right) in the 1st & 2nd pictures.  In the 1st nothing is happening, in the 2nd there is ice starting to break & the lady in the right of the frame is pointing.  In the 3rd picture Cathy turns to see the main event unfold and listen to the thunder.

Here’s the shot I wanted: Sawyer_Glacier13_Cathy

This is a tree that was stuck in the ice field on the water.  I wonder how many years that tree was frozen in the glacier.

A few shots of the many harbor seals hanging out on the floating ice field and a couple near by waterfalls.

A couple views of our ship (and another), from the tender ride that the captain was kind enough to offer to any passengers wanting to get closer to the glacier.

Eagles

None of these are very good pictures, and one through 8 are the same bird.  We saw many eagles, but none were close, and all were from boats.  This makes a bad combination for good still or video photography.  But here they are:

Sea Otters

The same story applies here as to the eagles above.  We have seen many sea otters before, but never a flotilla of otters like this.  This was our only sea otter encounter on this trip.  Too bad the photography conditions were not better.

Mendenhall Glacier

The Mendenhall Glacier is not as spectacular as Sawyer Glacier, and we had very little time there.  The last item here is a short movie of a salmon swimming the murky water by the glacier.

These pictures just don’t fall into any particular category.  Some are interesting, some are not, it just depends on your point of view.
