My Level 1 Certification Rocket

Black Rock NV - MudRock 2002

Thanks to Nadine Kinney for these great photos of my level 1 certification flight and it’s second flight in its two-stage configuration (e-mail her).  The rocket is a Public Missiles Ltd. (PML) “Mini Black Bryant X” kit.  The PML Co-Pilot controlled the dual recovery deployment & tracked altitude.  The booster used for two-stage flight is the PML Terrier kit using the PML Accufire staging timer.  An additional thanks goes to Jim Green for loaning me the motor casings for these flights, and supervising my first uses of RMS motors.  Without Jims help, I would likely have excellent pictures of rocket parts scattering about the pad.

This is me with the Mini BBX in the obligatory pre-launch “Boy & his Toy” photograph.

…3, 2, 1 & the cute little H128 came to life with a copperhead igniter, and the White Lightning propellant started doing its billowing smoky thing.

Lift-off!

The flight and dual deployment went well, and certification was successful.  Altitude was a meager 1,087’.

Below, the second flight was more fun using the Terrier booster in two-stage configuration.  The I357 motor gave it a nice kick off the pad (you have to love that Blue Thunder propellant).  Staging went well, then the H97 pushed the sustainer up to 3,993’ after coating he booster with black soot as is the Blackjack propellant custom.  This was a modest motor selection, but motor choices were very limited.  I highly recommend avoiding Blackjack propellant on upper stages (now).
